John 1:43-51
Reflect
Back in the early 1980’s I remember a particular television commercial for shampoo. The point of the commercial was that this product was supposed to be so amazing you just had to tell your friends about it. Once they tried it, they would tell their friends, and they told two friends, and so on, and so on. Even 40 years later I have heard a reference to the phrase “And they told two friends, and so on”. Frankly, I don’t think I have ever told one friend, definitely not two friends, about my amazing shampoo. I guess if it changed my world radically, I might tell someone about it. In today’s passage Philip meets Jesus and immediately has to tell Nathanael about this man who is the One the prophets of old had talked about. Nathanael initially is skeptical because of the reputation Nazareth had in his mind. Philip, not discouraged by Nathanael’s response challenges his friend to “come and see!” Nathanael does come and see, and through that encounter he confesses Jesus is the Son of God.
Apply
This year as we focus on going “Deep and Wide” my hope and prayer is that as our lives are impacted in-depth by encountering Jesus; we will encourage two friends or maybe more to “come and see” what Jesus might do with their lives.
