Devotional Guide for Friday, January 18

John 5:31-47

Reflect
What is your attitude when it comes to reading your Bible? In today’s passage, Jesus is laying out an argument to confirm the reality that He is the Messiah that was testified to in the Scriptures. During this argument, Jesus gives a scathing rebuke to His hearers: “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” I don’t think I need to spend the time convincing you that Jesus is indeed the Messiah, but I do want to invite you to consider the approach you take to the Bible. Do you study the Scriptures to simply fill your head with knowledge (which is a good thing, but not an end in and of itself) or do you study Scriptures to meet, encounter and be encountered by our living God? As you continue in your Bible reading this semester, ask Holy Spirit to make the word of God alive in you - that your life would know and reflect the character of Jesus.
