Devotional Guide for Tuesday, April 23

Luke 24:13-35

Reflect
These two brokenhearted disciples walking away from Jerusalem were a picture of disappointment, discouragement, and dashed hopes. They had just witnessed the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus, and could not understand this turn of events. They “had hoped that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel”. When our lives are turned upside down, it is hard to see hope – like it was for them to accept the testimony of the women, for there was a fear of further disappointment and pain. There was also a tendency to isolate themselves, walking away from the fellowship of the disciples, instead of being strengthened and awaiting God’s unfolding plan. Jesus came to them and addressed their dashed expectations with renewed expectations. “He explained to them what was said in the Scriptures concerning Himself”. Christ is the thread woven through all the Scriptures, the central theme that binds them together. They needed to know that God was still in control.

Corrie Ten Boom said “When the train goes through the tunnel and the world gets dark, do you jump out? Of course not. You sit still and trust the engineer to get you through.” His plans are far greater!
