Devotional Guide for Friday, June 14

Psalm 98

Reflect
While Pastor Daunavan is away on sabbatical, some of our worship leaders will be writing his devotional guide. Each one of these individuals is profoundly gifted and is excited to share a little bit of their hearts with you in addition to what they share on Sunday mornings.

The overarching theme of Psalm 98 is “this is what God has done”, so “this is what we will do”. This is an enthronement psalm, which means that it affirms God’s Lordship over everything. One of my favourite parts of this psalm is the beginning where it commands those reading or hearing it to sing a new song. Why? Because He has done marvelous things! The command isn’t a suggestion, but instead an encouragement to be thankful for what God has done. The process of singing a new song requires us to think of what we’re thankful for or to consider more deeply who God is, and sing that over our lives. It encourages us to think about the new things God is doing in our lives, and sing a new song out of that. This might look like a “thank you”, a “help”, or a “hallelujah”. We are all created uniquely, so the perspective that we bring when we worship God will be unique, and therefore God is more highly exalted in our lives, and over all creation. With this in mind, how can you be singing a new song to God? One of my favourite opportunities is when I’m alone, listening to or playing music, and just being honest with God. Maybe for you it’s singing in the shower, or on your way to work, but I would encourage you to sing a new song, because He has done marvelous things!
