Devotional Guide for Thursday, August 15

Isaiah 51:1-8

Reflect
The start of this chapter continues the theme of listening to/obeying the words of the Servant. The message is for those who are inclined to put their trust in God.  I found it interesting when a commentary mentioned the problem wasn’t captivity from a foreign people, but an alienation from God.  We can create our own captivity when we alienate ourselves from God.  In these verses we are called to “look back” to remember all that God has done and to believe He can overcome the evil in the world.  We are also encouraged to “listen”.  We are to listen to the message of salvation being beyond the limits of time and space; the promise God gave to the people in Isaiah’s time is also true for us.  We are also to listen to be comforted.  God has not abandoned us. God is faithful and true to His word.

Apply
Take some time today to reflect on the truths of these verses and how they apply to your own life.

Pray for Kyle and Jenna Straughan - ABWE Canada
In the fall of 2019, we have the opportunity of a lifetime to serve God and be a part of a missions team through ABWE Canada – Across Borders for World Evangelism. We will be serving in Santiago, Chile for one year with the possibility of extending to two years. The team in Santiago is at the Santiago Christian Academy. We will be using our spiritual giftings through various maintenance and building projects, administrative needs, and possibly stepping into a teacher’s assistant role. Starting August 27, we will be enrolled in an Intensive Spanish Program in Costa Rica, where we will be learning Spanish in a classroom setting and living with a Costa Rican family for 6 weeks. Following this, we will be flying down to Santiago, Chile. We are very eager to be used by God in this way and to see what He will teach us.
