Devotional Guide for Wednesday, August 21

Isaiah 56

Reflect
All of us have a desire to be satisfied; to live in a way that provides a sense of being happy, fulfilled. We do what we do because we are convinced that to do something else would not be as satisfying. Compare the stark contrast of the pathways mentioned in vv 1-2 and v 12. No doubt, as you read v 12 you will be quick to dismiss the foolish call to be filled with wine as an attempt to make the day great. This advice is focussed upon one’s own selfish narrow view of what brings greatness to a day. What do you make of the LORD’s declaration? “Keep justice and do righteousness”. That is as straight forward as it could be! Here is a question: As you review your last year, month, week, day, how are you boldly keeping justice and making things right? We are caught in an age of distraction and escape into a limited view of the gospel that has us repent of our sins and then wait on the sidelines for the bus that is going to “heaven”. God loves you too much to allow you to be satisfied with that.

Apply
As you look to the launch of the new ‘church year’, prayerfully ask the LORD where He is leading you to ‘keep justice and do righteousness’.
