Nehemiah 1

Reflect
“Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God”. Missionary Bob Pierce wrote this prayer on one of the pages of his Bible.  Bob got to the place where he would desire this kind of brokenness through a series of events in his life.  One especially significant event occurred as he was travelling to a Youth For Christ rally in China.  On his way he met a missionary teacher who was responsible for, but unable to care for an abandoned little girl.  When the missionary asked, “What are you going to do about her?” Bob gave the missionary his last five dollars and promised to give that amount every month.  With this encounter and through his prayer, Bob Pierce went on to start the organization World Vision.

Apply
Nehemiah’s heart was broken for the situation in Jerusalem.  This drove Nehemiah to his knees in prayer.  What breaks your heart?  This year as we explore our theme “20/20 Vision; Life as God Intends”, we may be confronted with situations we recognize as definitely not “life as God intends”.  If we do have these encounters that provoke us, what will we do?  Nehemiah definitely challenges us to do something.
