Devotional Guide for Tuesday, February 21

TUESDAY, February 21

Mark 10:35-45

Reflect

In today’s passage James and John mistakenly believe that Jesus will soon be establishing an earthly kingdom in Jerusalem.  Their desire for power leads them to do an end run around the other disciples to directly ask Jesus for plumb positions in his ruling government.

What James and John do not yet understand is that the way to glory in God’s kingdom is not through self-promotion but through sacrifice, service and suffering.  It does not involve pushing one’s personal agendas, but requires obedience to God and to God’s plans.

Jesus said He did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.  What does this mean?  Isaiah 53:11-12 prophesies Jesus pouring out His life unto death, bearing the sins of many, and making intercession for wrongdoers. Jesus had no personal agenda.  He obeyed the Father's will and displayed the greatest possible example of service to others by dying on a Roman cross, as a ransom for many.

What personal agendas of yours may be getting in the way of seeking and doing God’s will for your life?
