2 Corinthians 2:12-3:6

Reflect

Today I want to focus in on one specific verse of this passage. Paul talks about what being a Christian means and he uses a few different metaphors: 1) the fragrance of Christ, 2) sincere speakers of God’s word and 3) a letter written by the Spirit as a testimony of Jesus. The first metaphor says that we are the fragrance of Christ. Fragrance is a strong metaphor. Smell is something that can change the feelings of a room. If a room has an appealing fragrance to it, that can give us a positive attitude (and the opposite is also very true). Smell also sticks to people. While on a road trip, we stayed with pig farmers and got to go and see the pigs. They warned us that the smell of the pigs would stick to our clothes for some time (and they were right)! When we spend time with Jesus, we should smell like Him. What Paul is saying is as Christians our intimacy with Jesus should be so real and so evident that wherever we go, people can ‘smell Him’ on us. There should be something different about us. Is this the case in your life? Would you say you ‘smell’ like Jesus?
