Proverbs 22:1-16

Reflect

Kyle Rote was a National Football League player who was the captain of the New York Giants in the 1950’s.  After his death, Kyle Rote’s son said of all the compliments and awards his dad had received, one stood above the rest: 14 of his father’s former teammates named their sons Kyle.

Verse 1 tells us that a good name (to be well spoken of) is to be sought even over great riches.  This proverb does not oppose wealth but implies that it must be rightly obtained. Great riches bring great concerns and maintenance along with them, without adding any real eternal value to a person.  A good name, on the other hand, presupposes a person to be safe, wise and honest.  A good name points to the glory of God and gives a person greater opportunity of doing good.  With a good name we may create close, loving, trusting relationships that truly matter to people, like those Kyle Rote created.  Relationships like this naturally lead to opportunities for sharing the most intimate things in life, like Jesus.
