Colossians 1:18-20

Reflect

Supreme. First. Preeminent. These are titles that very few people hold.  The preeminent sprinter currently would be Usain Bolt of Jamaica.  Switzerland takes first place in the 2017 list of best countries to live in (Canada was second!). Canada’s supreme leadership position has been held by 22 men and 1 woman over 150 years. These are short-lived awards that can be taken away by a 100th of a second, a dip in the G.D.P. or a sway in public opinion.  Our passage today reminds us that amid the constant transitions of our world Christ is Preeminent, Supreme and First over all.  As head of the church Christ sets the course and determines the movements of the church around the world. As the firstborn from the dead, Christ rose from the dead never to die again. In this, Christ rose victorious over the wages of sin which is death and the grave. Christ has established His supremacy over all history and all of creation, whether it is on earth or in heaven.  And as Immanuel, the fullness of God with us, He brought us peace with God by His sacrifice on our behalf.

The accolades of this life come and go, but thanks be to God, Christ reigns supreme for ever and ever.
