FRIDAY, September 22

Colossians 2:1-5

Reflect

In these short verses we read a bit about the reason why Paul is writing this book to the church in Colossae: to be encouraged, knit together, and  to help them understand the riches of the mystery of knowing Christ. Paul also hints at something that the church was facing which was causing him some discomfort. The church being ‘deluded with plausible arguments.’ It seems that in the church at Colossae, people with whom Paul cared for deeply were being swayed by false teachings. Paul’s antidote for not being led astray: being consumed by ‘knowing’ the mysteries of God in Christ Jesus. In our day and age there are a lot of teachings that can lead us astray. One of the ways I try to discern what is from God and what is not is asking “does this glorify (make big) the person of Jesus?”, “does this fit in the whole story of the Bible?” and “if I followed this teaching, would this help me to become more like Jesus?”. If my answer to these questions is “yes”, I feel I can follow that teaching without being led astray. Let us commit to being people who are not easily led astray, but not just for the sake of ‘being right’; rather, for the sake of knowing and becoming like Jesus.
