Ephesians 5:21-33

Reflect

Today’s passage focuses on the reality of Christian marriage as a picture of the relationship that God has with His people. It’s a high standard for marriage and in many ways is very countercultural today. Marriage has become something that is more about emotion than about commitment, but God invites us to view marriage much differently. We are to view marriage as a metaphor of the love that God has for us. Husbands are called to love their wives as God loves the church. This kind of love is self-giving, unending, seeking the best for the other. Wives are to ‘submit’ to their husbands, honouring them, respecting them, allowing them to lead as they follow Christ. When marriages are functioning in this way, they are exhibiting to the world a picture of what God’s love looks like. Think of a married couple who exhibits this kind of love for one another, thank God for them and pray a blessing over them today. If you are married, thank God for your spouse and ask Holy Spirit to give you the strength to live this out.
