Devotional Guide for Tuesday, May 3

Matthew 27:32-44

 Reflect

Recently I watched dumbfounded as Brazil’s Federal Deputies voted “yes” or “no” for the impeachment of their President. Many were rude and nasty with their comments. As the vote was taking place, social media became a “war zone” of people taking sides. It’s amazing how quickly individuals can be absorbed into the wave of a mob. We see this “mob” effect in today’s passage. Matthew points out the suffering and shame Jesus silently endured as the “Lamb of God”. He refused the wine mixed with gall that would have made Him somewhat “numb”. He chose to suffer, so He could redeem. He was insulted by people passing by, and mocked by the chief priests, Scribes and religious elders. They said He saved others, but couldn’t save Himself. It wasn’t that He “could not”, but that He “would not”. Not saving Himself was His way of saving the world. How cruel to jeer someone so wounded! The thieves crucified with Him also heaped insults on Him. Luke says that one thief repented. He was able to move out of the “mob”, touched by Christ’s meekness and love.

 Prayer

Thank you Jesus, for choosing to suffer for me. May I always choose you!
