Devotional Guide for Thursday, April 19

Luke 18:18-30

Reflect

“How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God.”  My friends, most of those reading this are rich; many are rich by Canadian standards, and even more of us when we consider the whole world and history.  Most of us are within the top 10-20% of the wealthiest people who have ever lived.  These words ought to unsettle us.  Wealth has spiritual significance, and Jesus often warns us that it can subtly lead us away from Him.  How much of your time/mental space does the accumulation of, protection of, and longing for stuff and/or the experiences you can accumulate through wealth take up?  Is your security/hope/significance stemming from your stuff?  Jesus doesn’t say that all rich people must sell all they have, but we’d be foolish not to take seriously the danger of being led astray by wealth.  Jesus strongly warns us about this on numerous occasions.  “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”  “No one is good—except God alone.”  God is good, and He is capable of taking us over and through the most difficult challenges and dangers, including the journey with wealth.  He seeks to share His abundant life with us; God isn’t out to make us miserable.  Talk to Him today about your relationship with wealth, and consider having a conversation with someone else about what it means to live as those who are rich and followers of Jesus.
