Devotional Guide for Thursday, June 14

1 Samuel 13:23-14:14

Reflect

Looking backward often helps us move forward.  Faith is rooted in history.  In a time of Saul’s decline as a king and a time of indecision, Jonathan embodies what Israel was meant to be.  Jonathan knew the stories of his people, stories of a weak and frail people who had been saved, guided, and protected repeatedly by an extraordinary God.  People deeply rooted in that history don’t just say “nothing can hinder the Lord from saving.” They live like it.  Jonathan is not foolish; he discerns the Lord’s will (v 8-12) and then acts with great courage.  He and his armour bearer scale a cliff only to attack a garrison on top of that cliff.

Take time today to remember. Remember the amazing intervention of God all through history, including our history at McKernan.  Ask the Spirit to bring to mind stories of God’s faithfulness.  Thank Him and praise Him.  Pray that God will fill us with faith and raise up Jonathans in our midst who will lead us into whatever is next as we follow Him.  Ask God for courage to scale cliffs on the slightest hint of His leading.
