1 Samuel 14:24-48

Reflect

In this passage we get a glimpse of Saul’s lack of fitness to be king over the Israelites. We see Saul’s egocentrism coming out, imposing unnecessary hinderances on the army and making rash decisions. We can see how the army and the people are losing their confidence in him as they are able to convince him to change his mind about the fate of his son Jonathan. We get the picture of a brash, reckless ruler who has tasted power and victory, and let it go to his head.

We often recognize our reactions to God when things aren’t going well, but how does success affect our relationship with Him? When things start going well and it seems like everything is going our way, do we let that go to our head and assume it was our doing, or does it lead us to worship and acknowledging that God is sovereign over all?

How can we give God glory in the good times and rely on His strength and mercy when things go well, not just when things aren’t working?
