1 Samuel 17

Reflect

Today we read one of the most popular stories in the whole Bible: the story of David and Goliath. A small shepherd boy defeats the Philistine warrior! What I want to look at today is what made David different from the other Israelite warriors. First, David lived by faith while the others lived by fear. David saw the problem and his first instinct was ‘how are you going to get us out of this, God?’ while the others were so paralyzed by fear they could not even think to take the risk. Secondly, David had trust in God, the others had a misguided ‘trust’ in themselves. David believed that God could come through, because he had seen Him come through in the past. The others placed their trust in what they had (Saul’s armour) rather than in God, which crippled them. Finally, David had a holy anger and sense for justice while the others had apathy. David was angry that Saul was ‘defying the army of the living God’ and this led him to actions. The others had every right to be anger, but their fear crippled them with apathy. Are you facing Goliaths in your life like David did?
