1 Samuel 28

Reflect

This is a unique chapter in the Bible. Saul was in battle against the Philistines and he was fearful when he saw the size of the Philistine army. He asked the Lord what to do, but because of Saul’s disobedience, the Lord refused to answer him.  In desperation, he decided to go against God’s law (Lev. 19:31 and Deuteronomy 18:10-14), as well as his own law, in speaking to mediums. He asked his advisors to find him a medium to ask what to do.  Even the medium knew it was wrong and she was fearful, but Saul insisted.  Saul wanted to speak to Samuel who had just recently died.  In spite of the fact that the medium knew spirits are usually satanic, she knew she was dealing with a power far greater than she had known. God brought back Samuel to give Saul a message.   Samuel predicted the loss of Saul’s army, and that David would be given the kingdom, information that Saul already knew.
