Devotional Guide for Saturday, July 21

2 Samuel 4

Reflect

Reading this story makes me wonder what Baanah and Recab were thinking before they set out to kill Ish-Bosheth. I’m sure they were thinking, “We’ll go do this and avenge David against what Saul had done to him. Surely this is a good idea and something God would want.”

How many times have I thought to myself, “Surely this is a good idea and something God would want.”? But how many times do I actually take the time to ask God about it? Maybe what I think is a good idea is the exact opposite of what God would want, like in this story.

I wonder how different my day would look if I took the time in the morning to pause and ask God what He might have in store for me that day. And instead of living my life like I’m waiting for the Holy Spirit to catch up to what I’m up to, I live my life following the Spirit’s leading.

Apply

Take a few minutes today to pause and ask God, “What do You have for me today? How can I walk in step with Your Spirit today?”
