Devotional Guide for Friday, August 17

FRIDAY, August 17

2 Samuel 20

Reflect

Just when it looked like everything was going to be okay for King David (Absalom’s rebellion had ended and the tribes of Israel decided he would be their king), a new rebel arose and threatened David’s rightful throne. Recognizing the severity of his adversary, David’s general Joab quickly and very wisely (without destroying whole cities) was able to end the rebellion and secure David’s rightful place as king. Those who sought to come against the plans of the Lord had to pay the ultimate price. You would have thought that after all this time, the rebels would have learned they were in the wrong but they continued to challenge God and His chosen leaders.

What is our attitude towards the plans of God? How do we respond to godly authority in our lives? Sometimes, in our sin it’s easy to take a rebellious attitude and allow that to slip in. Today we are reminded of the importance of submitting to the authority and lordship of God, His Word, and those He has put in authority over us.
