Devotional Guide for Wednesday, September 19

Acts 6:8-15

Reflect

Yesterday’s passage introduced us to ‘Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.’ He was chosen to join the group to ‘serve tables’. Some would say that it’s quite a leap from waiting tables to his role here. Perhaps...but if we can know a man’s heart, we’d see that there really is no leap at all. On both days, Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit. The circumstances played out differently, but the core was the same. Waiting tables doesn’t draw attention (though it would be safe); proclaiming Jesus draws attention (though it may not be safe). Crucial all the time is that whatever is done is done with the fullness of the Spirit. As an overflow of the Spirit working through him, it made no difference to Stephen whether he was called to wait tables or testify for Jesus. Stephen did not start with proclamation, he started with making himself available.
