 mike About Pastor Mike:

As Congregational Life Pastor, Mike is responsible for ministries working with seniors, those going through major life events whether weddings or grief and loss, welcoming newcomers, as well as providing oversight to aspects of our prayer ministry and equipping events.

Being raised on a farm in rural Alberta contributes to Mike’s appreciation of the outdoors, and love of riding anything with two wheels.  Mike enjoys quiet early morning times in God’s word and his daily cup of great coffee. Mike is married to Terri (23 years), and they have three children, Lauren, Matthew and Landon.  Mike joined the staff at McKernan in 2017.

Option 2 - Practical Spiritual Conversations - Pastor Darren Platt

The great commission challenges us to go into all the world and share the message of Jesus.  We understand that may be a call to pack our bags and go thousands of miles from home.  It also may be a call to a short trip where we enter into the world of a colleague, a fellow student, a son or daughter, or even the person you pass on the street.  Pastor Darren will kickoff our weekend with a time of stories and of encouraging us to see the opportunities to live out our faith both deep and wide in the world in which we live.

This track runs Friday evening from 7:00-9:00pm and Saturday from 9:00am - 1:00pm.

Cost is $30 (lunch included)

About Darren:

Darren grew up in northeast Edmonton and became a Christian at the age of 18 when a pastor from Steele Heights Baptist Church (SHBC) shared the gospel with him.

He attended SHBC for seven years while completing his formal forestry education at NAIT and the University of Alberta. After graduation, he moved to northern Alberta to work in the forest industry for 12 years as a registered professional forester.

In 2001 he answered God’s call to pastoral ministry and moved back to Edmonton and served as an intern Pastor at McKernan Baptist while completing his Master of Divinity from Taylor Seminary. He began at SHBC in 2004 as Pastor of Adult Ministries and has served as the Senior Pastor since June 2007.

Darren and his wife Juanita have been married for 25 years and have four children. They have lived in the McLeod/Steele Heights community for the last 14 years and have a passion for reaching people for Christ in their neighbourhood.

Option 3 - Are You Responding to His Calling...or to the Need? - Aaron Cranton

Needs abound all around us; more than we can ever pour ourselves into. We desire to serve, but how do we discern which need is our calling? Is ‘our calling’ an illusive, spiritual sounding stumble; or an experience in being fulfilled with the sweet satisfaction of thriving exactly where the Lord desires us to be? Join Aaron Cranton as he guides us to wrestle with Scripture, reflect upon who we are, and explore pathways leading away from calling confusion.

Saturday from 9:00am - 12:00pm (lunch is included)

About Aaron:

Aaron came to Christ in February of 2014 while at the Men's Retreat at Camp Caroline and soon felt the Lord’s calling to serve, in the Spirit of Jesus, his homeless and marginalized neighbours in the Old Strathcona community. After several winters volunteering at The Neighbour Centre he transitioned to full-time employment there. During this time Aaron found that he also has compassion for incarcerated men which he expresses by walking with inmates as they make the transition from prison to freedom in our community.

In 2017, through prayer and affirmation from his pastors and peers, Aaron obeyed God's calling to journey - in a Street Outreach capacity and in the spirit of Christ - alongside neighbours who are experiencing homelessness as they seek and discover spiritual, relational, emotional, physical, and mental healing.

Aaron and Wanda are members at Strathcona Baptist Church. SBC is the covering church for the Old Strathcona Street Mission Outreach where Aaron serves as a missionary.

Option 4 - Hope Grown Faith - Christie Thomas

Ready To Help Your Family Grow In Faith? Now's Your Chance!

Do you feel uninspired to share your Christian faith with your kids?

Or maybe you've listened to so many podcasts that you feel a niggling sense of guilt for all that you're NOT doing...and can't seem to muster the energy to do more.

Or maybe your kids are asking faith questions that make your head spin, and no matter how much time you spend scouring Google, you can't find a good resource to help.

There's hope.

Hope Grown Faith can provide you with the inspiration, motivation, accountability, and resources to plant the seed of faith in your child and help nurture and grow them to fruition.

Saturday from 9:00am - 12:00pm

About Christie:

My husband and I are in the thick of parenting our three boys. (People tell me I must be busy, I'm not sure why...)

From 2006 to 2018 I worked as the Director of Children's Ministries at my home church in central Alberta, but I recently quit to focus more on this ministry and my books!

In 2012 I began work on my first book (not knowing it was a book), as I wrote weekly Bible-based devotions for the families in my church. In 2015 the devotions were released as "Wise for Salvation: Meaningful Devotions for Families with Little Ones". It is my great joy that this devotional has brought hundreds of families and children closer to God.

My current book projects are "Quinn's Promise Rock" and "Quinn Says Goodbye", both to be released from Harvest House Publishers in 2019. I am represented by Credo Communications.

My online writing has been featured on the Focus on the Family, at For Every MomThe Better Mom(in)courage by DaySpring, and Kindred Mom.

In addition, I write regularly for The MOB Society (Moms of Boys), and More To Be.
