FRIENDLY SMILES AT INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MINISTRIES
by Sam and Sophie Xu
It was two years ago when we arrived in Edmonton that we first heard about International Student Ministries.
Friends of ours informed us that ISMC provided furniture at no cost to international students in need. I made a request to ISMC through e-mail, and to our surprise two gentlemen delivered the furniture to us soon thereafter. We were so grateful.
The friendly smiles of the ISMC staff who delivered the furniture left a deep impression on us. We wanted to know more about ISM and the people who gave us help so readily and sincerely. Ever since then, our Friday evenings have been devoted to ISM. It has become a very important part of our lives.
Prior to attending ISM, we knew almost nothing about Christianity. From the group Bible study we have learned the basics about Christianity and the Bible. Messages from Bruno and other leaders always inspire us to relate what is told in the Bible to our everyday life. The most important thing we have learned about is God’s love to each human being, which has encouraged us to change our attitude towards other people and expand our perspective about the world and life. We also enjoy the time when we worship God by singing praise and worship songs. They are so beautiful and add to our understanding of the Bible.
Improving our English is the by-product of attending ISM. By studying the English edition of the Bible and discussing it with the leaders in English an hour every week, our English, especially spoken English, has improved dramatically.
My parents came to visit us from China for 5 months. They enjoyed Friday evenings at ISM and came almost every week. The ISMC arranged to provide Chinese Seniors Bible Studies at ICF in their own language so they could understand and participate in the class. My parents really appreciated this opportunity and their interest in Christianity grew. Before they went back to China, Kathy gave them a Chinese edition of the Bible as a gift and now they continue to grow in their understanding of the Bible, God and Jesus.
