Lyle Buyer - Senior Pastor
I have enjoyed the privilege of serving as Sr. Pastor since 1993. I am married to Jeannie, my most amazing partner in life and ministry, and we have four children; Daunavan (married to Kirsten), Adam (married to Jalene), Katie (married to Cody) and Mitchell. My key roles involve preaching and working with a great staff team and church board in giving leadership to the church. It is my desire that McKernan increasingly become a community of Jesus’ followers who are real with one another in our journey of transformation toward the likeness of Christ. Along the way, I want us to grow in our capacity to engage our community and world as good and godly neighbours. In my spare time, I am often involved in sports of some sort, either as a participant or spectator. I especially enjoy golf and volleyball and I am among those who cheer for the Oilers, convinced that they will be better next year!
Daunavan Buyer - Young adults & Worship Pastor
My name is Daunavan and I have been on staff here at McKernan since 2011. My wife Kirsten and I have one daughter, Ava, and we both have a heart for ministry and seeing people transformed by God’s love. My passion is discipleship – seeing people growing into the character and purposes of Jesus and watching how they see their lives and the world around them transformed. Personally, I love building relationships with people and investing into the lives of others. Sharing a cup of coffee, going golfing, playing music, reading a good book, or watching an Oilers game (most of the time) is how I enjoy spending my time.
My role at the church consists of overseeing all ministries involving 18 year olds to those in their mid 30’s, as well as overseeing Sunday morning worship teams and all sound/tech related ministries.

Jerilyn Bayer - Children's Ministry Director
My name is Jerilyn Bayer, and I have been the Children’s Ministry Director at McKernan Baptist Church since July 2014. I like to jokingly say that I am the “underground” pastor since our Children’s Ministry takes place in the basement. I oversee the Children’s Programs from Nursery – Grade 6, the Friday “Day Break”, and the Parent-Child Dedication Seminars.I have three married daughters, two life-giving granddaughters and one grandson. I enjoy reading, walking, story telling and chocolate. My background is in Christian Education and I have served in Brazil for 30 years as a missionary, church planter as well as co-founder of the Chain-of-Love homes (Christian homes for street children). I love the “buzz” as the children arrive, the moment of “awe” when the lesson touches the heart, and the “can I stay a bit longer?” when the parents come to pick up.
Moses’ dying words to the Israelites were: “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you – they are your life.” (Deut. 32: 46-47).
Sharon Harewood - CONGREGATIONAL LIFE Pastor (Part-time)
I have been attending McKernan since 2000, but I have been on staff since 2006 as the pastor of Pastoral Care Ministries. In January 2016 Christine Okken joined me to share the pastoral care role. I am responsible for hospital visitation, seniors’ initiatives, short term counselling and referral, care and support for people experiencing grief and loss, and oversight to our Healing Prayer Ministry. This role is very rewarding for a retired social worker called to ministry later in life! I have two married sons and one awesome grandson. I enjoy sharing life with my family, especially cheering at my grandson’s soccer games.
The favourite part of my job is walking with people going through tough times and sharing God’s love and care simply by being present with them. I love our inter-generational church and trust that we will continue to be a place where people of all ages can worship and serve together in the church, in the community and around the world.
Mike Bartusek - CONGREGATIONAL LIFE Pastor
As Congregational Life Pastor, Mike is responsible for ministries working with seniors, those going through major life events whether weddings or grief and loss, welcoming newcomers, as well as providing oversight to aspects of our prayer ministry and equipping events.
Being raised on a farm in rural Alberta contributes to Mike’s appreciation of the outdoors, and love of riding anything with two wheels. Mike enjoys quiet early morning times in God’s word and his daily cup of great coffee. Mike is married to Terri, and they have three children, Lauren, Matthew and Landon. Mike joined the staff at McKernan in 2017.
Christine Okken - cONGREGATIONAL lIFE Pastor (Part-time)
I’ve been on staff at McKernan since 2004, previously working as Youth Pastor for almost 10 years, and now in Congregational Life since 2015. Three areas I steward are Women’s Ministry, Stephen Ministry, and Baptism and Membership. I have a heart to see people experience God walking alongside of them in whatever they are going through. I love helping others find pathways through broken places, and to see them rebuild foundations in their lives so that they can walk with restored purpose and identity in Christ.
I am an Edmonton native, but moved to the US to take my Master's Degree at Sioux Falls Seminary. While there I re-met a pretty amazing guy named Terry who became my husband. He is also on the Pastoral staff here at McKernan. We have three great kids, a daughter in University, a son who just graduated from High School and a son in Junior High. They keep our lives full and full of laughter and blessing. I am also an artist and you will often find my fingers stained with art markers or paint as I create little canvases of love for others.
Terry Okken - Lead Team Pastor
As a member of the lead team, Pastor Terry provides supervision to and evaluation of the administrative office, daycare, facilities, and youth ministry. In addition, Pastor Terry gives leadership to men’s ministry, communications, financial processes, information technology, and human resources for McKernan Baptist Church.
Pastor Terry joined the staff in 2005. He and his wife Christine have three children – Emily, Ethan & Noah. Pastor Terry loves good coffee, the Oakland (soon to be Las Vegas) Raiders and of course the Edmonton Oilers. You can follow Pastor Terry on Twitter - @TerryOkken.
Dave Schneider - Youth Pastor
Hey! My name is Dave Schneider and I have been the Full-time Youth Pastor since August 2014. I’ve grown up attending McKernan and have been a part of the Youth Ministry in a number of different roles since 2006. McKernan is definitely home for me, and I’m so excited to be a part of what God is doing in and through the Youth Ministry.
My favourite part of my job is getting to build relationships with the youth, leaders, and families. I am passionate about authentically living life in community, and finding out how we can walk alongside each other as we learn what it looks like to live out our faith and relationship with Jesus. Currently I’m working on my Master's of Divinity at Taylor Seminary, and in my free time you can catch me playing squash, ultimate frisbee, or sitting down at the piano.
Dan Schroth - lead team Pastor
After 18 years of serving in civic service, I answered God’s call to full-time ministry: pastored in Winnipeg; attained my M.Div at Taylor Seminary (’05); and have served since then as a Pastor at McKernan Baptist Church. My current role includes the supervision of our Children’s Ministries Director, Congregational Life Pastor and Young Adults/Worship Ministries Pastor. I also lead the Missions and Outreach ministry, Small Group Ministry, and Leadership Ministry.
I'm thrilled to be married to Andrea (‘94), and together we have three vigorous boys (’97, ’99, and ’02) and one enthralling daughter (’06). As a family, we are trying to keep up with how the Spirit is leading in our lives. We are actively involved in global missions, primarily to Cameroon. We are a very active family, participating in many sports and outdoor pursuits.
I’m hard pressed to find something that causes me more satisfaction than when I can join with other followers of Jesus to do far more than just acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Saviour, but to treasure Him with their entire life; to follow His daring teachings and to live with radical grace among one another and toward all those that they are able to influence.
