Devotional Guide for October 14

Psalm 100

Reflect
From time to time I have been able to attend both Oilers and Eskimos games.  Walking up to the arena or stadium along with the crowd of sports fans, you can feel a sense of excitement building. There are some fans dressed up in our team’s colours.  Some are chanting “Let’s Go Oil-ers!” or “Here we go, Eskimos! Here we go!” Walking through the gates, the atmosphere gets more intense.  Music is playing, lights are flashing, everything is focused on encouraging the players and entertaining  those who have come to see a great game. As spectators, often we do our best to join the team on the field or ice in bringing about a victory by cheering and doing what we can to support our team.

Psalm 100 encourages us to show the same, if not greater, level of enthusiasm as we approach God. I have no issue jumping up in the stands and high-fiving a perfect stranger when a goal is scored. I wonder why I am so hesitant to raise my hands or shout for joy in celebrating God’s victories. The life God intends for us to live is not just sitting quietly in the stands. God invites us to get on the playing field of life and celebrate the victorious life in Christ.
