Devotional Guide for Dec. 4, 2019

Wednesday, December 4

Genesis 12:1-4

Reflect
As we continue the launch into the Advent season, today we encounter this profound passage which highlights the call of Abram. To be called by God. What does that mean to you? In recent years, many of our practices equate call with invite. See Mt. 22:3, where the same Greek word is translated both ways, but really should be “call”. What are some differences between call and invite? Why do you think our current culture is prone to prefer that God invite us rather than call us? What is at stake when we selectively hear God invite rather than call? As Abram obeyed the call given to him, countless numbers of people were able to receive the blessing (the projection of God’s goodness) of God. Answering the call of God is a high honour. Included in it are unique opportunities as well as special burdens and dangers for the called and their loved ones. These burdens can be successfully carried and the dangers gloriously overcome, but that will not happen unless you are open to God caring for you His way.
