Micah 5:1-5

Reflect
In order to really appreciate the prophet Micah we’d do well to take some extra time and read through the entire book. However, even in this short passage we are given a glimpse of one of the grandest theological thoughts that dramatically alters our worldview and is met with skepticism by many in our culture. Micah, writing some 700 years prior to the birth of Jesus Christ, reveals the transcendence of God. The same God that is King of all Kings, Ruler of the entire Universe, the One that is completely self-sufficient needs nothing from anyone. He shows absolutely no partiality. He is completely ‘other’ from us. That same God is profoundly beyond our comprehension. That same God tells Micah a ruler will be born who will save us all. He will be great to the ends of the earth. That same God will be born to a specific mother, in a specific town, and he will be closer, and in many ways tremendously ordinary. He will be immanent. He is now the One who gently, tenderly, and patiently comforts the afflicted. Transcendence and immanence. Which do you more easily accept? How does further actual acceptance of the other one bring you to a new level of spirituality?
