Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
Reflect
When Jesus was teaching this parable of the weeds, the people around would have been very familiar with farming and living in an agricultural society. Back then, if one farmer wanted to sabotage another, they would spread seeds of a weed called bearded darnel that would mimic characteristics of wheat until it matured, and could be poisonous in large enough quantities--not something a farmer wants to have mixed in with their wheat. In this parable the owner of the field tells the servants not to pull the weeds, because it’s hard to know the difference and they could unknowingly be pulling perfectly fine, healthy wheat. They wouldn’t be able to tell the difference until it was time for harvest. How often are we quick to judge the actions of someone else? The point of this parable is that you can’t always tell the difference between those who are good and those who aren’t. If we make judgments too soon, maybe we’re writing off someone too soon. Let’s leave the judging to the One who knows and sees all, who will be responsible for that sifting at the end of time.
