Psalm 57

Reflect

When our children were young, one of them raised chickens and another turkeys to make some extra pocket money in selling them. The hen hatched 13 beautiful chicks that soon ran all over the place to find food, but close enough to their mom. Whenever there was a threat of danger, the hen would call and within a second all the little chicks were under her wings, the mother looking double the size with her spread wings. But one day there were only 12 little chicks, the next day 11. What had happened? Neither the chicks nor us had heard the gathering call. What we soon discovered was that the slowly passing turkeys that looked so non-threatening, just gobbled the chicks up in one go. This picture sure reminds me of David's song that he composed during his flight from Saul, his persecutor: "For my soul takes refuge in you; And in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge until destruction passes by." David's life was often in turmoil, but he knew where to go to feel safe! In Phil. 4:6 we are asked to live by the same principles: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Instead of worry, carry it to God in prayer with thanksgiving, thanking God, because He is able, is faithful, and hears. Often, when I pray my thanksgiving part is somehow very short, so David giving extensive praise (vs.7-11) is quite inspiring for me. I hope David's extended praise is contagious for us as we head into this day, for we know that all things work together for good to those who love God!
