Psalm 121

Reflect

Have you ever fallen asleep at an inopportune time? I must admit I have fallen asleep in some places where it is generally not a place where you would or should. My list of places includes: the dinner table, a movie theatre, while visiting people in their home, and yes, in church (but not McKernan!).  Scripture gives us some examples of what can happen when we are asleep at the wrong time. There were those that missed what was going on, like the sluggard in Proverbs 6, or the disciples in the garden, and in 1 Thessalonians those who were asleep because they were up all night. There are also examples where falling asleep had serious repercussions. In the story of Sisera in the book of Judges, and Eutychus in Acts, they both died due to falling asleep in the wrong place, although Paul was able to miraculously bring Eutychus back to life.

Apply

This psalm reminds us that our Heavenly Father is never (to use the idiom) “asleep at the wheel”.  He is always attentive; He watches over us day and night. There is nothing that will take God by surprise. With that in mind we will still encounter difficult times, but we can rest assured that God is with us all the way through.
