Isaiah 9:8-17

Reflect

In today’s passage we read again how Isaiah is calling God’s people to address behaviour that is causing a rift in their relationship with God. The first behaviour is pride. They believe so much in themselves and can’t stand the thought of looking weak, that they won’t humble themselves and turn to God for help, strength and guidance. Pride keeps us from repentance, confession, and a humble admission of sinning. The second behaviour is adulation. They have forgotten who God is and have trusted in human leaders and are expecting these human leaders to be able to do superhuman things. They have stopped recognizing the lordship of God and now expect human leaders to give them security and meaning that only God can give. These behaviours, while not good, are something that can be changed. If we will humble ourselves before God and see Him for who He truly is, we can avoid the consequences that come from pride and praise for human leaders.

Paul is serving as campus leader of the Navigators of Canada at the University of Alberta, supervising, leading and shepherding the Navigator staff team. Guided by 2 Timothy 2:2, The Navigators of Canada have come alongside people who desire a deeper connection with God by offering a transformative and holistic mentoring relationship. The Navigators engage individuals with the life-giving Word and intentionally equip Christ-followers to confidently pass along their faith and, in turn, help others know Jesus. The Navigators choose to be faithfully present, to intentionally and actively engage in relational ministry: with students on campuses across Canada, with people in their communities and neighbourhoods, supporting and partnering with local church, working alongside business people, and in global contexts beyond Canada.
