Devotional Guide for Monday, November 30

Isaiah 40:1-11

Reflect

There is a difference between comfort and comfortable. I think of comfortable as good shoes, or my favorite chair. Comfortable is good and cozy, however it also can be used negatively when we cease challenging ourselves and we “get too comfortable”.
Comfort is different. Merriam-Webster defines comfort as both consolation (easing of grief and/or trouble), and cheer, (to give strength and hope). Here in Isaiah, God speaks a message of comfort to His people. God comes to His people who have been the recipients of some pretty rough news and assures them the there is good news. These days we all could use some good news. During these days we are thankful for the comfort we receive in God’s promises. He is sovereign. He is in control. He will work through the difficult circumstances we are facing. We can rest in those promises.

These words In Isaiah are not only a comfort to us but also an imperative, or instruction given to us to be of comfort. As we have received comfort, I pray that we all will answer the call to share this comfort with a world that so desperately needs the hope and strength that comes from knowing Jesus.  How can you share this gift of comfort during the Christmas season?
