John 12:44-50
Reflect
One of the most precious moments in life are sharing last words with those we love. Those words get played over and over in our memory, shaping who we are. This passage is one of those precious moments where Jesus is giving His final words in His public ministry. He declares to all and to many unbelieving Jews what His mission was, and why they should believe in Him. He declares that He came to:
Reveal the Father (vs44-45).
To bring light into the darkness (v46).
To establish everyone’s standing on the Last Day (vs47-49).
To declare the command of God that leads to everlasting life (v50).
Jesus’ mission was clear – He came from the Father, bearing the light of His love through word and deed. Those of us who receive Him, walk in this light. Those who do not, stumble around in darkness.
“O Lord Jesus Christ, Who art the very bright sun of the world, ever rising and never going down: shine, we beseech thee, upon our spirit, that the night of sin and error being driven away by thy inward light, we may walk without stumbling as in the day. Grant this, O Lord, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost for evermore. Amen.” -Prymer (1559).
