Mark 11:20-26

Reflect

When is the last time you can honestly say that your prayers were answered? When you pray, do you do so from the assumption that God will move? Today's passage is an interesting one. Jesus instructs His disciples about praying with the assumption that God will answer that prayer. He even promises them that when the pray in this way, it will be done for them! I don't think Jesus is teaching us to pray for a fancy new car, or to have no more troubles in this world. Rather, He is teaching us to pray by faith. Praying by faith means praying with an understanding of and trust in the heart of God and a hope that His will is best, even when it is unseen. Praying by faith doesn't just mean believing harder as we pray. Rather, praying by faith means praying in alignment with the purposes of God and knowing that our prayers will be heard and answered according to the character and purposes of God. Sometimes, when a prayer is not answered in a way that we would expect, God's larger purpose and plan, which we cannot see, is being enacted. This invitation is one to pray more, to pray in line with what we believe to be true about God, and to believe that He hears our prayers and moves in response to them.
