2 Peter 1:12-21
Reflect
How can we be sure that what we believe about Christ is reliable? This is a crucial question for us as followers of Jesus. Peter is addressing his readers around this question. He is claiming to them that the reality of Christ and the truth of His return was not just a cleverly devised story - it was the very truth of God.
We live in a world that will try to tell us the Bible is just a 'cleverly devised story' and that its teaching is antiquated and 'on the wrong side of history.' Sadly, some of this teaching is infiltrating parts of the church as pastors and leaders are claiming that certain parts of the Bible do not stand the test of time. These claims are simply untrue.
The Bible is the most reliable historical book that exists, without dispute. The stories it presents are not just fantasy, they are true and reliable. The authors of the New Testament truly walked with Jesus and witnessed Him doing the things He claimed (Peter explicitly states this in verse 16). I believe what Peter is doing in explaining all of this, is presenting His readers with the question: so what? If this is really true, if we really believe this, how will we live? If Jesus really is who He says He is and did what the Bible says He did, wouldn't that make us want to follow Him and tell others about Him?
The Bible is true and powerful. Its words contain and point us to abundant life, the life that comes from surrender and yielding ourselves to the reality of this truth.
