Proverbs 10:1-14

Reflect

Today's reading is a collection of (somewhat related) instructions that contain both a command and a blessing. For example, "Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked” (v5).
While I was working through my ordination paper, one of the things I had to write about was how I view the Scriptures. I mused about how many people see the Bible as a binding book of rules and some even reject relationship with God because of these rules. The challenge with this line of thinking is that the “rules” are always associated with a promise, and full obedience to God is always associated with freedom. God, in His sovereignty and knowledge, invites those who are in relationship with Him to a way of life. This way of life is in line with the intent for which we were created. When we choose to submit and give ourselves to His Lordship, we are living the way we were created to live. When we choose to put ourselves on the throne of our lives, we will be consumed and enslaved.
