Ok, you better sit down for this because this will be new. Sometimes, people that love Jesus will disagree on very important issues. Yup, it’s true. Can you think of anything active in our current culture that is divisive? Often both sides will take a leap and try to fit a Bible passage into their already pre-determined decision. No surprise that today’s passage usually shows up like a blunt knife in an attempt to justify that conclusion. Also, no surprise that there is usually an issue that is behind the issue.
Paul does not teach about freedom here to try to end an argument. I’m confident that he is providing context for how we should respect and treat one another through the differences rather than cancelling or condemning the other person and their view. Consistent Jesus teaching is that we are to love one another (Rom. 13:8). That’s what is on Paul’s mind here. Our actions should be for the overall good of Jesus’ bride, the church. Pretending we don’t differ is not love; being willing to listen respectfully is.
Who do you have a difference with? The mature person always takes the first step towards reconciliation. Let me know if I can help.
