Devotional Guide for Friday, October 22

1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Reflect

In this ministry year, we are focusing on our identity as God’s people as we move forward in these uncertain times. Today our devotional readings take us from Romans, where we explored how we are people rooted in the good news of Jesus Christ, to the book of 1 Corinthians, where we will see Paul calling the church back to their core identity as God’s people as they struggled through a number of practical issues.
It is so very encouraging to read in today’s passage how Paul introduced the letter.  Rather than begin with harsh words, taking the Corinthians to task over the issues they were facing, he began with very affirming words, reminding them that they were people “sanctified in Christ Jesus” (v2). They had been made clean, or made holy, not by their own efforts, but by the work of Christ. They were defined not by their failures, but by the gracious love and truth of Christ. It is from this foundation that Paul would then challenge the issues they faced. They did not need to fix all their issues on their own to restore themselves to God. They started from a place of relationship with Christ and could lean into the active presence of His Spirit as they renewed their walk with Him.

Are there areas in your life where you feel you just aren’t measuring up? Take heart from this passage and be reminded of God’s “sanctifying” work in your life. Be honest with God about these areas and ask Him to work in your life by His Spirit.
