Devotional Guide for Monday, October 31

Acts 20:1-12

Reflect

Often, we read of young Eutychus and see the humour of the story. Paul is going on and on and Eutychus just can’t stay awake. The humourous message is about the danger of long-winded preachers. Is that why God chose to include this among the narrative we have of Paul’s ministry?

We can assume that Paul did many amazing and miraculous things that are not included in Scripture. Is this story in here to provide some comedic relief? Perhaps. But what about the parable of the 10 virgins or disciples in the garden of Gethsemane? Are these accounts of failing to stay awake included for humour alone? I don’t think so.

In that line of reasoning, what other motive might there be for the story of Eutychus? Could it be that this is a warning of the dangers being lulled to sleep in our spiritual life when we are being challenged towards vigilance? I am not advocating for a refusal to see the lighter side of things, but at the same time let’s not miss out on a sobering call to be awake and alert when the consequences are substantial.
