Devotional Guide for Wednesday, December 7

Isaiah 9:1-7

Reflect

As someone who has lived near the Rocky Mountains all my life, I recognize how easy it is to lose the wonder of their majesty. I appreciate the times I get to play tour guide to someone who hasn’t seen them before. In their amazed expressions, I get to see God’s handiwork again through a set of “fresh eyes.”

Might our experience of Christmas be all too similar? We grow up in church and lose the wonder of this One who was born in the manger. Isaiah gives us a soaring description of this Child who would be born. How can a newborn child encompass all that’s contained in the titles, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace?” And yet, that’s exactly what Jesus did as He entered the world that first Christmas Eve. As Juana Ines wrote in the 17th century, here was “Greatness in smallness, Immensity in blankets.”

On this week when we focus on the hope of Advent, how important to remember both the majesty and grace of the One who walks with us as light in our darkness (v2). May God grant us renewed wonder as we remember who truly lay in that manger. It will put our challenges in proper perspective.
