1 Chronicles 15:1-29

Reflect

David planned and prepared for this occasion for he wanted to bring the ark to Jerusalem the right way. He had learned from past error (13: 8-11), when his attempt to bring the ark ended up in disaster. This was a very joyful and glorious procession. David’s heart was totally involved, and it demonstrated his great love for God. It is interesting to note how the event ends with a sour note as he is “despised” by his wife Michal. It is obvious that she did not share in David’s enthusiasm and devotion to God. David’s dance wasn’t a solo performance, for the context places him together with the priests and Levites, putting aside his royal robes to dress as they were dressed.

Apply

Michal’s complaint (seen also in 2 Samuel 6: 20 -23) seems to be more about David setting aside his royal garments, humbling himself before God, and identifying himself with the entourage. Morgan, a theologian, says: “The incident illustrates the perpetual inability of the earthly minded to appreciate the gladness of the spiritual”. It is wonderful when a couple can share a deep love for God and desire to serve Him. Pray that there would be shared joy in worship and service among our couples, bringing them closer together and closer to God.
