Two days ago, I finally found a chain and pendant that my mother gave me some 40 years ago. It had been missing for a decade! The pendant is a Russian 5 ruble from 1910 and has Nicholas II on it. My great grandmother fled during the bitter winter as a refugee with it sewn into her coat’s hem. How I wish the coin could tell me the story of how my ancestors clung onto the faithfulness of God through their affliction.
It is imperative to know that what we read in Chronicles was written some 500 years after the events. A closer source is found in Samuel/Kings. While he writes, the readers had just undergone a horrific exile. They had been horrendously afflicted, some for 100 years. The Chronicler’s motivation reveals that he is selective on what stories to mention and what to highlight. His motivation is to provide these beaten down people with what it takes for spiritual and social renewal.
Now, knowing that, as we read these passages, we can better appreciate how crucial it is to know the story of those who have gone before us.
What do you know of your spiritual heritage? Who can you listen to learn where you have come from?
Where do you fit into the story?
How will you be intentional about passing down a spiritual legacy to generations long after you are gone?
