Psalm 16

Reflect

Expressions of joy are found throughout Scripture.  It is interesting to note that joy can be found in many different situations, and not all of them are filled with sunshine and lollipops. In fact, joy can be found amid really hard situations. James counsels us to count it all joy when we meet various trials. How can this be? If we go to Galatians, we discover that as believers we have the Holy Spirit in us, and that one of the fruit that is borne by the presence of the Spirit is in fact joy.

Joy does not necessarily come only when the external circumstances align themselves in our favour. Joy can be found when things go sideways. This is because joy comes from the presence of the Holy Spirit who is found in us. David is keenly aware of this here in Psalm 16 in which he begins looking for a safe place to take refuge, and at the end of the Psalm he is declaring that joy can fill our lives simply by knowing God is with us.

Jesus came to us as Emmanuel, God with us, and the Holy Spirit remains with us and bears the fruit of joy with his presence. May you know His joy today.
