Devotional Guide for Saturday, July 22

Exodus 9:1-35

Reflect

The passage today finds us in the middle of a pretty well-known Bible story. Pharoah is refusing to let the Israelite people go, so God sends ten plagues over Egypt. We pick up the story in the fifth plague. We read about a plague on the livestock of the fields, a plague of boils, and a plague of hail.

The Egyptian people worshiped many gods or goddesses. Each plague that God sent would have shown the power of God and the emptiness of the Egyptian religion. Hathor was the goddess of love and protection that was depicted with the head of a cow. Isis was the goddess of medicine and peace, and Nut the goddess of the sky. The plague of livestock, boils, and hail showed the power of God against the power of Egypt.

Worshiping Egyptian gods is not common today, but what else do we worship other than God? Is there anything in our lives that we worship more than God? Anything or anyone that is more important to us than God. Do we come to Jesus with our needs?

Take a minute to ask the Lord to search your heart and pray that He would be first in your life.
