Psalm 120
Reflect
When we open up the Psalms we see a wide array of emotions, thoughts and struggles presented. The Psalmists write about their real and honest human challenges and fears. There are highs and lows, praises and laments. The Psalms can give us the words we need to express what is going on in our lives and gives us permission to lament and grieve.
The Psalmist today has experienced the pain that comes from “lying lips and deceitful tongues.” It is super painful for someone to say something about you that is a lie, and even more painful if it is believed by others. My immediate response would be to defend myself, to make sure people know the truth. But the Psalmist doesn’t do that. Verses 1-2 says, “I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. Save me, Lord from lying lips and deceitful tongues.” In a place of pain and distress he turns to the Lord. He places his pain in God’s hands as well as the outcome.
Apply
Whatever you are working through today, whether it is lying lips or something else, you can bring God your pain. He is not far away.
