John 13:18-30

Reflect
Have you gone through any sort of betrayal or been let down by someone close to you? When you trust someone and really allow them to be close to you and they break that trust, it can really hurt. Today we read the story of Jesus’ recognition of an imminent betrayal by one of His closest friends. Judas had spent the last few years with Jesus and the other disciples; he was one of the inner core. Jesus had invested so much into this young man and he was about to hand Jesus over to death. Philippians 2 tells us that Jesus became a man, like us, in every way. He did not come as one in power, He came as one who served. This amazing truth is so clear in the story we read in John today. While it is a difficult story, it is encouraging because it reminds us that Jesus is able to sympathize with us in the difficulties we face. Whether it is betrayal, temptation, pain, not being understood, Jesus went through it all, and not only that, He meets us in those places.

Apply
Take some time today and ask Jesus if there are any areas of weakness or pain that He wants to meet you in. Remember that He sympathizes with you because He has been through them Himself.
