Isaiah 52

Reflect
As a child, I was quite inquisitive and often wanted to know what was happening, where we were going, and why we were doing the things we were doing as a family. A response that my parents often gave was “the adults in your life have it under control.” Being a parent myself, I wonder if that answer was always ’true’ but I digress. Sometimes my childlike mind and questions were so focussed on understanding something, but I often didn’t have an understanding of the bigger picture. If you want an understanding of the ‘big picture’ in the story of God, today’s passage is a really good place to start. Isaiah 52 provides hope for a people asking a lot of questions. This is essentially Yahweh’s reassurance to His people that ’I have your hopeless situation under control.’ Not only does this passage trace God’s presence through the history of Israel (He reminds them of how He’d been at work in the past), He begins to reassure them of His plan to be at work in them in the future (through His servant, who you will read more about tomorrow).

Some of us may have a lot of questions for God today. We may be wrestling with how He is at work, what He is doing, and when He is going to answer these questions. Today’s passage reminds us that even when life seems bleak, He has a plan, He has a big picture; we can trust Him.
