Psalm 73

 Reflect

In this Scripture passage the psalmist covers a lot of ground and addresses questions we have all pondered at some time in our lives.  Basically, this is a ‘how come?’ Psalm: How come the wicked seem to get all the breaks, do well, and are full of pride without consequence? How come the innocent (like me) are punished and oppressed? Does ”God know” (v.11) what is really going on in the world? In verse 2 the psalmist admits his own arrogance and envy, and then changes his perspective: “I (he) entered the sanctuary of God; then I (he) understood their (the wicked) final destiny.” (v.17) The bitterness in his own heart was transformed; he saw life from God’s perspective, an eternal perspective. The final verses of this psalm describe this new perspective and end with a declaration: “I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge: I will tell of all your deeds.” (v.28)

Apply

I admit that I have spent some time pondering  ‘how come’ questions of my own, questions to which there are no clear answers except to recognize the sovereignty of God and confess that He is a good, faithful, loving God. What are some of your ‘how come’ questions? What is God teaching you about His eternal perspective and His character?
