Psalm 74

Reflect

The Babylonians had destroyed Jerusalem and the temple of God.  From the perspective of the psalmist it assuredly looked as though God had rejected His people (v.1,2).  As he focused on what the enemy did - hacking away at the temple, burning to the ground every place where God was worshipped, and defiling God’s Holy Name (v.6-8), the psalmist fell into despair.  But in verse 12, he looked up from the earthly devastation to the glorious throne of God and got a new perspective.  He understood that God had not relinquished His authority to the Babylonians.  God was still on the throne, still in command.  He remembered God’s greatness and His wonderful deeds (v.13-17) and his outlook changed to one of hope, knowing that God was still at work.  When you are in distress and having trouble hearing God’s voice, reflect on God’s great acts throughout Biblical history.  Think about what He has done for you.  Contemplate His greatness, His mighty power.  What a great God and King we serve!  As the song declares, “God I look to you.  I won’t be overwhelmed.  Give me vision to see things like you do.”
